Mechanism of action

Bevacizumab binds to vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), inhibiting its interaction with receptors (VEGFR-1 and VEGFR-2) on endothelial cells, thereby preventing angiogenesis, which reduces tumor blood supply and growth.

Precautions

Monitor for hypertension, proteinuria, infusion reactions, gastrointestinal perforations, wound healing complications, hemorrhage, thromboembolic events, congestive heart failure, reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome, neutropenia, ovarian failure, embryofetal toxicity; avoid in pregnancy, caution in surgery and invasive procedures, assess renal function and urine protein.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to bevacizumab or excipients, pregnancy, uncontrolled hypertension, recent surgery, serious hemorrhage, gastrointestinal perforation, congestive heart failure, thromboembolic events, wound healing complications.
