Inhibit HIV-1 reverse transcriptase by acting as nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs); after intracellular phosphorylation, their triphosphate forms competitively inhibit viral reverse transcriptase (EC 2.7.7.49), causing DNA chain termination and preventing viral RNA-dependent DNA synthesis, thereby suppressing HIV replication.
