Azithral 500 Tablet contains Azithromycin 500 mg per tablet.

Dose

For adults, Azithromycin 500 mg is typically taken once daily for 3-5 days. Pediatric dosage is 10 mg/kg on day 1, then 5 mg/kg on days 2-5. Adjustments may be needed for hepatic impairment; not recommended in severe cases. Renal impairment does not require dose adjustment.

Mechanism of action

Azithromycin binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of bacterial ribosomes, inhibiting protein synthesis by blocking translocation of peptides. This action prevents bacterial growth, leading to bacteriostatic effects against susceptible organisms.

Precautions

Hypersensitivity to azithromycin or macrolides, hepatic impairment, renal impairment, QT prolongation risk, use with caution in patients with myasthenia gravis, electrolyte disturbances, cardiac arrhythmias, avoid concurrent use with ergot derivatives, monitor for signs of liver dysfunction, Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to azithromycin or macrolides, hepatic dysfunction, concurrent use with ergot derivatives, history of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated with prior azithromycin use.
