Dose

Adults and adolescents over 12 years: 408 mg once daily. Children under 12 years: not recommended. Renal impairment: use with caution; dose adjustment may be necessary. Not recommended in severe hepatic impairment.

Mechanism of action

Binds reversibly to the 30S ribosomal subunit of bacterial ribosomes, inhibiting aminoacyl-tRNA attachment to the mRNA-ribosome complex, thereby blocking bacterial protein synthesis and exerting a bacteriostatic effect. No direct action on human ribosomes due to structural differences.
