Mechanism of action

Carbimazole is metabolized to methimazole, which inhibits thyroid peroxidase, preventing iodination and coupling of tyrosine residues in thyroglobulin. This action reduces thyroid hormone synthesis, leading to decreased levels of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).
