Drug classification

Meftal-Forte Tablet is an oral, film-coated tablet for oral administration.

Dose

Meftal-Forte is typically taken orally every 8 hours as needed, with dosing individualized by prescriber. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration. Not recommended in severe renal or hepatic impairment. Safety and dosing in children under 12 years are not established. Always follow prescriber instructions and approved product information.

Mechanism of action

Mefenamic acid inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2), reducing prostaglandin synthesis and inflammation. Paracetamol inhibits central COX, likely COX-2, decreasing prostaglandin production in the CNS, resulting in analgesic and antipyretic effects. Together, they reduce pain, inflammation, and fever by limiting prostaglandin-mediated responses.

Pregnancy category

Use in pregnancy only if clearly needed; both components may pose risks, especially in the third trimester. Consult a healthcare provider before use.

Precautions

Avoid in peptic ulcer, GI bleeding, renal/hepatic impairment, asthma, hypersensitivity to NSAIDs, monitor for GI symptoms, renal/liver function, blood counts, avoid with other NSAIDs, caution in elderly, pregnancy, lactation, monitor for allergic reactions, avoid alcohol, use lowest effective dose, short duration.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to mefenamic acid, paracetamol, NSAIDs, active peptic ulcer, gastrointestinal bleeding, severe hepatic or renal impairment, history of asthma or allergic reactions to NSAIDs, third trimester of pregnancy.
