Drug details

API

Aztreonam (1gm)

Drug classification

Azom 1gm Injection is a monobactam antibiotic, subclass of beta-lactam antibacterial agents.

Dosage form

Sterile powder for solution for injection or intravenous infusion.

API strength per dosage

Dose

Aztreonam 1g is typically administered IV or IM every 8–12 hours in adults; dosing frequency and amount depend on infection severity and renal function. In paediatrics, dosing is weight-based. Dose adjustment is required in renal impairment. No adjustment is generally needed for mild-to-moderate hepatic impairment. Always consult product guidelines for specific recommendations.

Mechanism of action

Aztreonam binds to penicillin-binding protein 3 (PBP-3) of susceptible Gram-negative bacteria, inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis by blocking peptidoglycan cross-linking. This disruption leads to cell lysis and death, exerting a bactericidal effect. Aztreonam is a monobactam antibiotic, structurally distinct from other β-lactams.

Indications

Severe bacterial infections

Side effects

Rash Injection site reactions pain swelling redness Vomiting Nausea Diarrhea

Pregnancy category

Aztreonam should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed; limited human data, animal studies show no harm. Consult a healthcare provider before use.

Precautions

Hypersensitivity reactions, cross-reactivity with beta-lactams, renal impairment, hepatic dysfunction, superinfection risk, Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea, periodic renal and hepatic function tests, hematologic monitoring, monitor for signs of anaphylaxis, adjust dose in renal impairment, caution in elderly, monitor for rash or other allergic reactions.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to aztreonam, hypersensitivity to other beta-lactam antibiotics (e.g., ceftazidime), history of severe allergic reactions to any component of the formulation.
