Mechanism of action

Doxycycline inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, specifically blocking the attachment of aminoacyl-tRNA to the mRNA-ribosome complex. This action prevents the addition of amino acids to the growing peptide chain, effectively halting bacterial growth.

Pregnancy category

Precautions

Avoid in pregnancy and children under 8 years, photosensitivity risk, take with plenty of water, avoid lying down immediately after dosing, may reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives, caution in hepatic or renal impairment, possible interaction with antacids or iron, monitor for superinfection, discontinue if hypersensitivity occurs.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to doxycycline or tetracyclines, pregnancy (second and third trimesters), children under 8 years, severe hepatic impairment, concurrent use of retinoids.
