Dose

For adults, the recommended dose of Secnidazole (Secnil Forte Tablet, 1000mg) is 2 grams taken orally as a single dose. For pediatric use, dosing is based on weight, typically 30 mg/kg as a single dose. Adjustments may be necessary for renal impairment; consult specific guidelines.

Mechanism of action

Secnidazole inhibits nucleic acid synthesis by disrupting DNA's helical structure and strand breakage, targeting anaerobic bacterial and protozoal DNA. This interaction results in impaired bacterial cell function and cell death.

Precautions

Avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least 3 days after, monitor for leukopenia and neuropathy, caution in hepatic impairment, not recommended during first trimester of pregnancy, use caution in breastfeeding, potential for dizziness or vertigo, may interfere with AST, ALT, and LDH tests.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to secnidazole or other nitroimidazole derivatives, first trimester of pregnancy, breastfeeding, history of blood dyscrasias, neurological disorders, hepatic impairment.
