Drug classification

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant.

Dosage form

Film-coated oral tablet containing escitalopram oxalate 10 mg.

API strength per dosage

Dose

Escitalopram 10 mg is typically started at 10 mg once daily for adults; dose may be increased based on response. In elderly or hepatic impairment, start at 5 mg once daily. Use in children and adolescents varies by indication and is not always approved; consult guidelines. Dose adjustments may be needed in severe renal impairment.

Mechanism of action

Escitalopram, the active ingredient in Szetalo 10 Tablet, selectively inhibits the serotonin reuptake transporter (SERT) in the presynaptic neuron, increasing serotonin levels in the synaptic cleft. This enhances serotonergic neurotransmission, which is associated with antidepressant and anxiolytic effects.

Pregnancy category

Escitalopram should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed; potential risks to the fetus must be weighed against benefits to the mother.

Precautions

Monitor for worsening depression, suicidality, serotonin syndrome, QT prolongation, hyponatremia, bleeding risk, mania in bipolar disorder, withdrawal symptoms on discontinuation, use caution in hepatic or severe renal impairment, elderly, and those on other serotonergic or QT-prolonging drugs, avoid abrupt cessation.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to escitalopram or citalopram, concurrent use with MAO inhibitors (including linezolid and methylene blue), use with pimozide, known QT interval prolongation, uncontrolled epilepsy.
