Drug classification

Beta-2 adrenergic agonist; selective short-acting beta-2 agonist (SABA).

Dosage form

Oral tablet containing 2 mg of salbutamol.

Dose

Salbetol 2 Tablet (salbutamol 2mg) is typically dosed in adults and children over 12 years as 2–4 mg three or four times daily. For children 6–12 years, 2 mg three or four times daily; for 2–6 years, 1–2 mg three or four times daily. Use caution in renal or hepatic impairment; start at the lower end of dosing range.

Mechanism of action

Salbetol 2 Tablet contains salbutamol, a selective β2-adrenergic receptor agonist. It stimulates β2 receptors in bronchial smooth muscle, activating adenylate cyclase and increasing cAMP, resulting in relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle and bronchodilation, which relieves bronchospasm and improves airflow in conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Pregnancy category

Salbutamol should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus; consult a healthcare provider.

Precautions

Monitor for tremor, tachycardia, hypokalemia, paradoxical bronchospasm, hypertension, hyperglycemia, use cautiously in cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, seizure disorders, pregnancy, lactation, avoid excessive use, assess response and adverse effects regularly, adjust therapy as needed.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to salbutamol or excipients, severe hypokalemia, history of paradoxical bronchospasm with beta-agonists, caution in patients with tachyarrhythmias, hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, or unstable cardiac disease.
