Dose

Adults: 10 mL every 6 hours. Children 6-12 years: 5 mL every 6 hours. Not recommended for children under 6 years. Adjust dose for hepatic impairment; contraindicated in severe impairment. Use cautiously in renal impairment.

Mechanism of action

Dextromethorphan acts as an NMDA receptor antagonist, reducing the cough reflex. Phenylephrine stimulates alpha-1 adrenergic receptors, causing vasoconstriction which decreases nasal congestion.

Indications

Cough suppression, nasal congestion relief, reduction of cold symptoms.

Precautions

Monitor blood pressure, avoid in hypertension, caution in heart disease, diabetes, thyroid disorders, enlarged prostate, glaucoma, respiratory disorders, liver or kidney impairment, avoid concurrent MAOI use or within 14 days of stopping MAOIs, potential for abuse, caution in pregnancy and breastfeeding, avoid alcohol.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to ingredients, MAOI use within 14 days, severe hypertension, severe coronary artery disease, children under 12 years, pregnancy, breastfeeding.
