Mechanism of action

Indications

Cryptococcal meningitis, systemic candidiasis, pulmonary cryptococcosis, urinary tract candidiasis, endocarditis due to susceptible Candida or Cryptococcus species, chromoblastomycosis.

Side effects

Bone marrow suppression, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, anemia, hepatotoxicity, elevated liver enzymes, gastrointestinal upset (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), rash, confusion, hallucinations, renal impairment.

Pregnancy category

Precautions

Renal impairment, hepatic dysfunction, hematologic disorders, bone marrow suppression, concurrent nephrotoxic or myelosuppressive drugs, elderly patients, pregnancy, breastfeeding, regular monitoring of blood counts and renal/hepatic function, risk of secondary infections, gastrointestinal disturbances, use with caution in patients with pre-existing cytopenias.
