Mechanism of action
Diazepam binds to GABA_A receptors, enhancing the effect of the neurotransmitter GABA by increasing chloride ion influx, leading to hyperpolarization and decreased neuronal excitability, resulting in anxiolytic, sedative, muscle relaxant, and anticonvulsant effects.
Indications
Anxiety, muscle spasms, alcohol withdrawal symptoms, seizure disorders, sedation before medical procedures.
Side effects
Drowsiness, fatigue, muscle weakness, confusion, ataxia, respiratory depression, hypotension, blurred vision, urinary retention, gastrointestinal disturbances, paradoxical reactions (e.g., agitation, aggression), dependency, withdrawal symptoms.

Contraindications
Myasthenia gravis, severe respiratory insufficiency, sleep apnea syndrome, severe hepatic impairment, acute narrow-angle glaucoma, hypersensitivity to diazepam or benzodiazepines, children under 6 months.
