Dose

Adults and children ≥12 years: 17.2 mg sennosides once daily, maximum 34.4 mg twice daily. Children 6–11 years: 8.6 mg once daily, maximum 17.2 mg twice daily. Not recommended for children <6 years. Use with caution in elderly and renal impairment; adjust dose as needed.

Mechanism of action

Indications

Constipation, bowel evacuation before diagnostic procedures, bowel preparation before surgery.

Side effects

Abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea, electrolyte imbalance (hypokalemia), dehydration, melanosis coli, dependence with prolonged use.

Pregnancy category

Category C

Precautions

Avoid use in intestinal obstruction, acute abdominal pain, undiagnosed gastrointestinal symptoms, inflammatory bowel disease, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, chronic use, pregnancy, breastfeeding, children under 12 years, hypersensitivity to senna, consult a doctor if no bowel movement after use, potential for drug interactions.
