Dose

Apply Clotrimazole 1% mouth paint to the affected area 2-3 times daily. For pediatric use, consult a healthcare provider for appropriate dosing. Adjustments may be necessary for patients with liver impairment. Continue treatment for at least 1 week after symptoms resolve to prevent recurrence.

Mechanism of action

Clotrimazole disrupts fungal cell membrane integrity by inhibiting ergosterol synthesis, specifically targeting lanosterol 14-α-demethylase (CYP51 enzyme). This leads to increased membrane permeability and leakage of essential cellular components, resulting in fungal cell death.

Indications

Oral candidiasis, angular cheilitis.
