Dose

For adults and adolescents, the standard dose of Microgynon (Ethinylestradiol 30 mcg / Levonorgestrel 150 mcg) is one tablet daily for 21 consecutive days, followed by a 7-day tablet-free interval. No specific dosing adjustments are recommended for special populations based on available data.

Mechanism of action

Ethinylestradiol binds to estrogen receptors, and levonorgestrel binds to progesterone receptors, modulating gene expression and inhibiting ovulation. This combination suppresses luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), thickens cervical mucus, and alters the endometrial lining, preventing sperm penetration and implantation.

Indications

Contraception, treatment of menstrual disorders, management of dysfunctional uterine bleeding, treatment of endometriosis, cycle control, reduction of menstrual pain, acne management, premenstrual syndrome management.

Side effects

Nausea, headache, breast tenderness, mood changes, breakthrough bleeding, increased blood pressure, venous thromboembolism, arterial thromboembolism, weight changes, decreased libido, increased risk of breast and cervical cancer.
