Pharmaceutics Pharmaceutical Packaging

Types of Packaging Materials

Topic overview

Start with the big picture

Packaging materials are selected in relation to the product they contain and the protection it requires. Glass, including ampoules, vials, and bottles, and polymers such as HDPE and PET are used for liquid dosage forms. Blister packs combine materials such as PVC and aluminum for oral solids and unit dosing, while Alu-Alu packaging offers high-barrier protection for sensitive drugs. The lesson also considers metals, paper and board, smart packaging, and sustainable materials. Selection involves chemical compatibility as well as effects on stability and use. Regulatory evaluation may consider toxicity, migration, leachables, and performance. Packaging design can also influence branding and regulatory approval.
