Pharmaceutics Pharmaceutical Packaging

Regulatory Aspects of Packaging

Topic overview

Start with the big picture

Regulatory review considers whether packaging preserves product stability and sterility, limits contamination and degradation, and avoids harmful physical or chemical interactions. Requirements apply to packaging components and to the final marketed pack used in stability studies and regulatory submissions. Evaluation may address protection from moisture, oxygen, and light, as well as material migration, including extractables and leachables. Documentation is also central: components need certificates of analysis and supplier compliance records. Labeling, tamper evidence, child resistance, and serialization are additional regulated considerations. The lesson organizes these expectations around regulatory requirements, packaging types, testing and compliance evaluation, stability studies, and common compliance challenges. Noncompliance may create safety concerns, recalls, or delays in approval.
