Evaluation of Aerosols
Start with the big picture
Aerosol evaluation focuses on performance at actuation and over the product’s shelf life. Dose uniformity checks the amount of drug delivered per actuation, while spray pattern and plume geometry describe the aerosol cloud’s shape and spread—features relevant to delivery and deposition. Particle size distribution is another key consideration for respiratory targeting. Evaluation also addresses valve and container integrity, net content and fill weight, and stability. Stability checks may consider physical and chemical changes, propellant pressure and delivery consistency, and microbial quality when applicable. The deeper lesson explains the purpose and general approaches for these assessments, connecting product characteristics with reliable inhalation delivery without treating any single test as a complete measure of performance.
What you'll learn
- Describe the purpose of dose uniformity testing for aerosol products.
- Explain how spray pattern and plume geometry relate to aerosol delivery.
- Identify particle size distribution as an evaluation parameter for inhalation aerosols.
- Recognize container, valve, fill-content, and stability checks.
- Distinguish physical, chemical, delivery, and applicable microbial stability assessments.
