Evaluation and Quality Control of Semi-Solid Dosage Forms
Start with the big picture
Evaluation begins with appearance and homogeneity: products should have uniform color and smooth texture, without grittiness or phase separation. Analytical checks assess drug content, pH, water content, and other formulation properties. Physical and structural tests examine viscosity, consistency, spreadability, extrudability, and particle or globule size. Performance testing can include in-vitro release and permeation, while microbiological testing and irritation assessments address quality and dermal safety. Stability studies and packaging-integrity tests help identify changes over time or risks of contamination. Together, these methods provide a structured view of product quality; the appropriate tests depend on the formulation and the quality attribute being evaluated.
What you'll learn
- Identify physical and organoleptic checks used to assess semi-solid products.
- Describe analytical tests for drug content, pH, and water content.
- Distinguish tests of consistency, spreadability, extrudability, and rheology.
- Recognize how microbiological, safety, and stability evaluations support product quality.
