FOUNDATION SKILL · Dilution

In a calculation exercise, what volume of a 10% solution is needed to make 250 mL of a 2% solution, assuming compatible solutions and additive volumes?

  1. 20 mL
  2. 50 mL
  3. 100 mL
  4. 125 mL
Reveal answer and explanation50 mL

Use C₁V₁ = C₂V₂: V₁ = 2 × 250 ÷ 10 = 50 mL. Dilute this to a final volume of 250 mL. Adding 250 mL of diluent would give the wrong final volume.

NOW CHANGE THE NUMBERS

What if the required final volume were 100 mL at the same strength?

Check your working

20 mL of the 10% solution, diluted to a final volume of 100 mL: 2 × 100 ÷ 10 = 20 mL.

Check your method

Try the same method with different numbers. Explain each step without looking at the answer.

  • Write what the question asks you to calculate or decide.
  • Identify the relevant information and its units.
  • Show the method before calculating the final answer.
  • Check the size and unit of your answer for plausibility.
  • Record the reason for an error, then retry later without the solution.

What else should you practise for SAPC?

Practise other topics too. Check the official guidance for the full syllabus.

Calculation technique

Practise concentrations, dilution and quantities with clear units. Separate an arithmetic slip from misunderstanding the method, then revise the cause.

General section reasoning

For each practice scenario, identify the patient-care or professional decision being tested before looking at the options.

Internship context

Use examples from supervised practice to connect knowledge to safe decisions. Keep current SAPC materials beside your revision plan for local requirements.

Keep short calculation sessions throughout the week, even when your main focus is the general section. Follow a calculation session with a general-practice case so you practise changing between numerical and professional reasoning. Recheck errors without copying the original working.
