FOUNDATION SKILL · Concentration conversion

A calculation exercise gives a concentration of 25 mg in 5 mL. Express this in mg/mL.

  1. 0.2 mg/mL
  2. 5 mg/mL
  3. 20 mg/mL
  4. 125 mg/mL
Reveal answer and explanation5 mg/mL

Divide the mass by the volume: 25 mg ÷ 5 mL = 5 mg/mL. Keep the unit in the answer; a correct number with a wrong unit does not express the same concentration.

NOW CHANGE THE NUMBERS

At that concentration, what mass of ingredient is present in 12 mL?

Check your working

60 mg: 5 mg/mL × 12 mL. The mL units cancel, leaving mg.

Check your method

Try the same method with different numbers. Explain each step without looking at the answer.

  • Write what the question asks you to calculate or decide.
  • Identify the relevant information and its units.
  • Show the method before calculating the final answer.
  • Check the size and unit of your answer for plausibility.
  • Record the reason for an error, then retry later without the solution.

What else should you practise for GPhC / CRA?

Practise other topics too. Check the official guidance for the full syllabus.

Calculation accuracy

Work methodically with units and retain your unrounded values until the final step. Read the requested unit and precision before submitting an answer.

SBA and matching

Practise distinguishing an acceptable action from the single best answer to the stated task. For matching exercises, assess each stem independently.

Professional practice

Connect practice scenarios to the current framework and UK guidance. Explain the reasoning behind an answer rather than memorising its position in a list.

Use frequent short calculations sessions alongside longer written-question blocks. In your error log, separate failure to recall a fact from misreading the question or failing to apply it. Rehearse the official question styles using the regulator’s sample material too.
